NUSA CENINGAN
AN INTRODUCTION TO NUSA CENINGAN

NUSA CENINGAN

Nusa Ceningan is the smallest of the three Nusa islands southeast of Bali. It is located between Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida.

The island can be reached from Sabur by taking the ferry to Nusa Lembongan first. From there one travels by ojek (motorbike taxi) to a small and narrow bridge which connects Nusa Lembongan with Nusa Ceningan. This bridge is fit only for pedestrians and motor bikes.

Contrary to sister island Nusa Lembongan there is hardly any tourist infra structure. No hotels and restaurants and just a few shops and warungs. The roads are bad so expect basic conditions when traveling the island.

Pura Ulun Danu of Nusa Ceningan is a temple that is dedicated to Dewi Batari Ulun Danu, goddess of the lakes and rivers. This temple is situated on the western part of Nusa Ceningan, one of the three sister islands that are located just off the coast of South-East Bali. This Ulun Danu temple is also known as 'the Temple of the Cave', as it is built on a hill, sitting on top of a holy cave, the Goa Raja or "King's Cave".

Placed on a concrete platform in this temple sits a small ship flanked by the statues of Dewa Baruna, god of the seas, and Dewi Ayu Mas Segara, goddess of the Southern Seas - in Java commonly known as Lörö Kidul.

Goa Raja - This cave also houses a small temple and it can be reached via a narrow staircase which is hewn out of the rocks, descending to the entrance of the cave. The Goa Raja cave, considered to be very holy, in general can only be visited by priests. In very rare cases westerners are permitted to enter the holy cave.
