BHUTA YADNYA

Bhuta Yadnya ceremonies (upacara) are intended to cleanse

  1. the physical content of a specific space (like temples, land or house compounds, and the people c.q. animals who live in that space) from the negative aspects and influences of non-physical content of that space.
    .
  2. the non-physical content of a space (consisting of various entities of bhutakala - spirits - that are considered to be lower than mankind) from its negative aspects and influences. The power of the postive aspects of these entities that will remain can then be used for the wellbeing of mankind and his environment.
In short it can be said that the Bhuta Yadnya ceremonies are performed to 'satisfy' the evil spirits (Bhuta Kala) so these will not create a disbalance in the daily life of a person c.q. household. The people of Bali believe that if these Bhuta Kala are not looked after with daily ceremonies and offerings, they will cause disturbances in daily life, such as the loss of something valuable, an illness or an accident. Symbolically the Bhuta Yadnya ceremonies create a balance between sekala and niskala, between the visible and the invisible world. Besides, the ceremonies are also intended to pray to Sang Hiyang Widi (as the Balinese call the One and Only God) for spiritual and physical strength.
Segehan Mancelime

Bhuta Yadnya Offerings
(upakara)

The following offerings are commonly used with bhuta yadnya ceremonies

  • Segehan (segehan kepel, segehan cacahan, segehan agung)
  • Tetabuhan (tuak, arak, brem, water, raw blood of animals)
Here, besides the segehan, caru is used.
  • Api Takep (fire and smoke)
Depending on the importance of the ceremony, there are three different types of ceremony:
  • The most simple ceremony is done with a segehan that, besides rice, may consist of among others onion, ginger, salt, etc. where the type of segehan varies according to shape and color of the rice that is used in it.
  • A moderate ceremonies, besides segehan, a caru offering is used (= an offering containing meat (mostly chicken)
  • At very rare and important ceremonies the ceremonies are referred to as Tawar. Here we disginguish Tawur Nyepi Kesanga, which occurs once a year, the Panca Wali Krama Bhuta Yadnya ceremony which occurs once every ten years, and the Eka Dasa Rudra ceremony which occurs once every one hundred years.
