SUGIAN PENGENTEN

HARI RAYA SUGIAN PENGENTEN

Sugian Pengenten is the first of three Sugian ceremonies that are performed to cleanse the bhuana agung (the environment of the individual human being, or macro-cosmos) and the bhuana alit (the micro-cosmos or the inner world of the individual human being) of negativity, and at the same time to create awareness of one's sacred inner power. The three Sugian ceremonies are (sequential):

    1. Sugian Pengenten
    2. Sugian Jawa
    3. Sugian Bali

Ethymology

Pengenten is derived from the Balinese word enten (= to wake up), which refers to the process of making the individual human being conscious of his inner world and to 'wake up' his sacred inner power.

Ceremonies of Sugian Pengenten

During this day the followers of Balinese Hinduism try to focus their consciousness on the importance of self-control in respect with the selfish desires of the ego versus the un-selfish goals of the soul, or the higher self.

One prays for a clear mind with positive thinking and for strength to refrain from nurturing the negative emotions that are symbolically bestowed upon man by the so-called Kala-tiganing Galungan or Sang Kala Tiga, being Sang Bhuta Galungan, Sang Bhuta Dungulan and Sang Bhuta Amangkurat.

Celebration date of Sugian Pengenten

Sugian Pengenten takes place one week before Galungan Day, at the Wednesday of the 10th week of the Balinese Pawukon calendar, Sungsan.

You may consult the ceremony calendar for this year's specific Sugian Pengenten date.
